Caim Chaluim Chille chaoimh (The encompassing of Columba the kindly)
Julie Fowlis, Éamon Doorley, Zoë Conway and John McIntyre have come together at the invitation of the Royal Irish Academy’s Committee for Irish Language, Literature and Celtic Cultures to create a truly memorable new piece of music to celebrate Colm Cille 1500. The commission was enabled by the kind assistance of the Department of Foreign Affairs. Their piece is based on a text from Alexander Carmichael’s Carmina Gadelica, a multi-volume collection of Gaelic prayers, incantations, charms and songs collected in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland over one hundred years ago. The musicians have also woven into the text some words from a blessing from the Middle-Irish period. Their composit...

Òran an Ròin / The Song of the Seal
Просмотров 127 тыс.4 года назад
A traditional Gaelic song from the voice of the seal people or selkies. Creatures who were said to shed their seal skin and take on the human form at certain times of the year. Creatures who moved between the parallel worlds of sea and land, but never truly belonging to either. I learned this from the singing of the Rev William Matheson of North Uist/Edinburgh. Sharing today this stunning piece...

As promised, here is a newly commissioned animation we have been working on to the opening track of alterum. The song ‘A’ phiuthrag ’sa phiuthar’ (O sister, beloved sister) tells the powerful traditional story of two sisters - one of whom is stolen away by the ‘sìthichean’ or fairy-people. Her sister searches in vain for her. This moving animation was made by two talented artists, Eleonore Damb...

I keep coming back to this video for one primary reason - the dog's eyes. They have something in them which encapsulates that mysterious faculty of mind which we term 'beautiful.' When I die, the first being I want to meet is my lovely girl, my Border Collie, Em. She died of a tumour at age four-and-half. It broke my bloody heart and I still mourn forty year on..

Cain and Abel. The burden of the first born, the creativity of the second born. The tiller of the fields, the shephard. The double face of Janus, looking up to the parents, looking down at the other siblings. Under the auspices of the first born the second born can take flight. A third can rebel. Through the long years we have lived our love has deepened. This song is a treasure.

Julie’s comment in an interview for this album, where she talked about music and language being connected to the land of a people really deeply struck me. It made me realize the loss of self-understanding and heritage that unguided modernism and “change” brings to the world. Some of the most meaningful and beautiful music is that I’d ethnic sounds which has had centuries of history and stories as is foundation.
